Iodic Acid

Iodic acid is an essential chemical compound with various uses across several industries. From manufacturing to analytical chemistry, Iofina can provide bulk iodic acid, at high-purity levels, catering to your business’s scientific needs.

What Is Iodic Acid?

A member of the oxo-acid group, iodic acid is a solid white compound that is soluble in water. Due to its strong oxidizing properties, iodic acid is considered one of the most stable oxo-acid halogens. Its diverse properties make it invaluable in preparing iodine-based compounds like potassium iodate, in analytical chemistry to standardize solutions and further in redox titrations, where it is used to determine the concentration of reducing agents.

Iodic Acid Applications

Due to its stable nature and oxidization properties, iodic acid, CAS # 7782-68-5, is used in different branches of chemistry to formulate various compounds. Some of the main uses of iodic acid are:

  • Standardizing agent: As a relatively strong acid with a pKa of 0.75, iodic acid is used in analytical chemistry to standardize strong and weak bases when paired with indicators like methyl red. Analytical chemistry is the science of determining the quantity of existent matter in a solution.
  • Salt synthesis: Iodic acid is used in the salt production process to improve the iodine content of salt. When iodic acid reacts with potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide, it produces potassium iodate or sodium iodate, which are then used to iodize table salt. Iodized salt has proven to provide enhanced nutrition and combat iodine-related deficiencies.
  • Oxidizing agent: Since iodic acid contains iodine in the oxidation state of +5, it is a strong oxidizing agent used in a number of reactions. When gently heated, iodic acid is dehydrated to form iodine pentoxide. Iodine pentoxide can be used to analyze the carbon monoxide level in gas samples and to oxidize CO to carbon dioxide.

Safety Handling

Iodic acid is corrosive and regarded as a skin and eye irritant. So, care is required when handling this compound. We advise wearing protective material to avoid direct contact with skin. Another important point of caution is the compound’s flammability. Iodic acid is not directly flammable, but as an oxidizing agent, it may intensify fire. Store it away from open flames or any combustible material. The ideal storage environment is in a glass bottle at room temperature.
