Hydriodic Acid Applications

Hydriodic acid is highly corrosive and should only be used in controlled amounts and environments. Some of the primary applications for this acid include:

• Organic synthesis: Hydriodic acid is a primary reagent for introducing iodine into organic molecules. This reaction can be found in experiments such as creating alkyl iodides from alcohol. 
• Reducing agent: Alternatively, hydriodic acid can break down compounds, making it a useful reducing agent. Specifically, it can reduce organic compounds, including nitro compounds to amines.
• Pharmaceuticals: Hydriodic acid also serves as an intermediate in pharmaceutical production. It works to manufacture acetic acid, which is found in blood sugar, blood pressure and ointment medications.
• Disinfectant: Hydriodic acid is also found in many household disinfectant products. It is high in acidity and effective in eliminating germs and viruses.
